about

Dragline is the result of a three-year effort. Recording at Rocking Horse studios in Pittsfield, NH started in 2010 as a new Tractor Trailer record, but the effort ultimately stalled. In 2013 I decided to pick up the pieces of that record and push forward with a new solo release. New songs, musicians, and fresh ears were put to good use as mixing and mastering wrapped in May of 2013.

Stylistically, Dragline ranges from the power pop of Gimme a Reason to the soul drenched riff rock of Young Bloods to the Chips Moman/Dan Penn influenced Downtown Yesterday to the countrified AOR of Easy Morning. All together it forms a unique and singular sound that I have dubbed Rugged Pop. While stylistically diverse the CD is held together by the professional musicianship put forth by the Rocking Horse House Band. The final touch is the deft ear for clean, clear, and extraordinary mixes that Rocking Horse owner and chief engineer Brian Coombes has developed over the years. The result is a record that should hold its own in todays super saturated world of DIY music.

about

Coby Carlucci Salem, Massachusetts

I have been performing in and around New England for 20 years. I describe my sound as Rugged Pop and have been likened to Elvis Costello fronting ZZ Top (or perhaps Nick Lowe fronting Humble Pie). I have three CD’s to my credit (so far!!) the most recent, Dragline, will be available in September. Cheers! CC. ... more

Track Name: Gimme a Reason
Give me a reason I would be on your mind
Give me a reason I can’t find
Give me a reason I would be on your mind

Give me a reason I would be on the run
Give me a reason I have none
Give me a reason I would be on the run
Track Name: Dragline
I can’t feel my fingers in the morning
The day before just some toxic dream
There ain’t no way to give yourself a warning
That you shouldn't mix the dirt with the Benzedrine

And I don’t need persuading
There's no need for escalating
cause there not much left to lift for a hoist like me

But there’s a dragline
Dredging up and down my spine
And I’m gonna lose what's mine
If I don’t cut this damn dragline
This damn dragline

I wish I had a dollar for every ailment
And every pain in every joint I feel
there's nothing you can buy to fix the aching
from too much time ill spent with sludge and steel

Life is so conflicting
and I'm no fan of the heavy lifting
I could drift right through this world if it would just let me

But There’s a dragline….

Time is just a waste of time…. wait and see

I feel so over-exposed in the morning
I guess I better move to the Salton Sea
If those physics spills and fish kills don’t undo me
At least they’ll wipe my head of cobwebs and misery

I can’t talk to strangers
And I'm not no fan of danger
and sometimes in this life you just wanna give in

but There’s a dragline...
Track Name: Sunday
Oh Li Lis on it now, the wind it coddles like a mother
as she swings out over grass as green as joy and joyous we
we sing of super heroes we sing our favors to the river
its been flowing since forever as it flows slowly somewhere

oh everybody's here and oh the time that we’ve been having
oh everybody’s here until Sunday when they go

and i lose a bit of something, it hurts me like a pin
sunk deep into my spirit, so deep it lacerates the skin
now Tuesdays often dreary, and wednesdays justs as drab
nothing seems to last its always Sunday Morning

we furrow through the pines, we follow imaginary paths
we’re foraging for treasure, wagons parts and medicine glass
and the animals don’t notice they have seen this kind of thing before
indifferent as sailors enraptured by the river’s peace

oh everybody's here and oh the time that we’ve been having
oh everybody’s here until Sunday when they go

and i lose a bit of something, it hurts me like a pin
sunk deep into my spirit, so deep it lacerates the skin
and now Tuesdays often dreary, and wednesdays justs as drab
nothing seems to last, it's always Sunday Morning

oh if i had some string, maybe i could tie the doorways
oh if i had some tape, maybe i could seal the windows shut
oh if i had some glue i could bind us right to this moment
oh and thursday would be the day and Sunday would never get a chance

to slip in like a mamba, thats searching for the river
and it bites you on the finger, just as you canter in the shade
and now Tuesdays often dreary, and Wednesday is just as drab
nothing seems to last, it's always Sunday Morning
Track Name: Concrete Alibi
The color of the urban sky
Frames this concrete alibi
to the blah and the hum and drum
That’s why I’m riding with the top down
And I’m in love with this town

And there can be no greater play
To be cruising past the alley ways
Bumper to bumper and fist to fist
How could there ever be a time like this?
And I’m in love with this town

It doesn’t matter to me
What’s on the other side of history?
We’re just a blip on a screen
That gets deeper and wider the more that you try to figure out
What you can’t figure out

I sing the songs on the hit parade
As I go whooshing by the palisades
I never feel that far away
When I’m riding with the top down
I’m in love with this town
Track Name: Young Bloods
Well all these young bloods, they know how to party
They know just how to party
But they don’t party like me
These young bloods
Always down for a party
Yes they know just how to party
But they can’t party like me

You think I’m ashamed
I’ll show you a-gad-damn-shamed
You think I’m ashamed
Well shame on me

Well these city lights
They’re my anti-kryptonite
I get down each and every night
No one parties like me
All these young bloods
Lining up like jokers
Big dumb belly strokers
They can’t party like me

You think I’m ashamed

Well the other day somebody tried to tell me that I aint right
With all the ...
Well I’ll show that sucker what it really means to be a man
Cause there aint no one in this town who can party just as hard as I can
I aint looking for no satisfaction
I aint looking for no kinda love
I’m just looking for a clean well lit place and a couple young bloods to shove

I aint looking for no therapy
I aint looking for no clarity
I aint looking for no charity
I’m just looking for some chains, chains, chains
Track Name: Downtown Yesterday
I am the sun you are the stars
Never together in the sky
We use to walk these streets in winter
Gin twinkle in our eyes
Now the pavements cracked and crumbled
All the shops have shut down
Its getting harder not to stumble
On the same streets we use to walk around

Hold me baby and tell me you broke down
Something I see right through

It’s been cold this October
the frost hit Columbus Day
Its been an ice box in my living room
And its been like that since May
Clocks ticking and a tocking
And it talks to me sometimes
It says this ticks are gone forever
And the tocks they aren’t to far behind

Hold me baby …

There’s salty tears in my coffee cup
And all my heart strings have knotted up
What were you doing with my best friend downtown yesterday

Just a little bit of time, time time time

I can’t hate you
But I can hate these walls
I can hate the way you avoid my eyes
And the silence when he calls
I’ve been drinking, I've been drinking, drinking and a thinking of you
Yes I’ve been thinking, I’ve been thinking
That it’s the same shit I used to put you through

Hold me baby…

There’s salty tears in my coffee cup
And all my heart strings have knotted up
What were you doing with my best friend downtown yesterday
Baby baby I’ve had enough
And all my friends say I’ve given up
What were you doing with my best friend downtown yesterday… downtown yesterday
Track Name: A Clean Fresh Start
There will be nothing for you later
There is nothing for you now
But you have time and you have heart
All you need is a clean fresh start

So rinse away the insinuations
and wipe away the the nasty looks
he wasn't there when you needed him
just like he knew he should

Oh angie, they say you got a lot on your mind

You wanted babies on top of babies
and diamonds dripping from the sky
the perfect life, the perfect wife
clipping coupons with a butchers knife

No one ever needs to tell you
nothing works out in the end
but downtown yesterday
there's was nothing to pretend

Oh angie, they say you got a lot on your mind

You can’t eat, you can’t sleep

Times get tougher by the minute
A better life so hard to miss
The roses wilt the tables tilt
You lose the flavor of the first kiss

You don't want someone to love you
you just want someone who tries
the center of seduction
just seems to fit you right

Oh angie, they say you got a lot on your mind
Track Name: Easy Morning
Just another easy morning easy summer easy day
never have to lift a finger, lonely faces get outta my way

oh when you wake up, when you wake up i will be laughing at you
oh when you wake up, when you wake up i will be loving you forever

Just another easy morning, some get lost some get found
feet up the sun is shining, looks like mine is coming back around

oh when you wake up, when you wake up i will be laughing at you
oh when you wake up, when you wake up i will be loving you forever

and don’t say goodbye, cause i ain’t leaving
don’t say goodbye, i will be right here
and don’t say goodbye, cause i ain't leaving
i’ll be by your side, when you wake up
and when you wake up i will be loving you forever

Just another easy morning, easy summer, easy day
greener grasses, and deeper glasses, lonely faces get outta my way

oh when you wake up, when you wake up i will be laughing at you
oh when you wake up, when you wake up i will be loving you forever
Track Name: Elderberry Wine
Dear Jesus, Sweet Jesus, oh won’t you come down
and show us how to get ourselves out
of what we got in, you know where we’ve been
won’t you come down and stay for awhile and keep us company

a chorus of angels gathered by the fire, drinking elderberry wine
they’re waiting on their savior, he gets later everytime

Dear Jesus, Sweet Jesus, oh won’t you come down
and show us how to get ourselves out
of what we got in, you know where we’ve been
won’t you come down and stay for awhile and keep us company

To friends and to family, good fortune and good luck, now
pass the elderberry wine, as we’re waiting on our savior he gets later everytime

and a river of kindness flows through you, it flows through you

a chorus of angels singing by the fire, drunk on elderberry wine
they’re waiting on salvation, it gets later every time

Dear Jesus, Sweet Jesus, oh won’t you come down
and show us how to get ourselves out
of what we got in, you know where we’ve been
won’t you come down and stay for awhile and keep us company
Track Name: Weather and Luck
I am obsessed with the temporary
The temporal as well as this nasty weather
all the pleasures in life seem clouded by dark intemperate skies
I just hope that tonight there’s no nasty weather

I don’t believe in anything, except the weather and luck

I am not blessed, I’m just ordinary
But even Jesus Christ, he hated nasty weather
all heaven’s delights are tainted by dark intemperate skies
It adds a rumble of thunder to your once perfect day

I don’t believe…

I don’t know, maybe I don’t want to know
The less I know, the less I have to let it show
The less it shows the less I have to let it go
Will I ever let it go?

Some pray for rain, they cast their hands up to the sky
Singing ditties of solace, to some drenching god
I should lend them my service, just prop me up on the totem pole
There’ll be no need to worry
There’ll soon be sodden skies...

I don’t believe…
Track Name: Times of Trouble
I was thinking about the cold and bitter end to us all
all these years to figure out what takes a finger snap to fall
and every boulder up the crag just tumbles to the right
and every little waste of breath just makes you more uptight

and I’ll sit with you in times of trouble
I’ll sit with you in chains
But I will never save you

I was dreaming of a void that stretches till the dawn
and all the people that I love just want to move along
I sing a song for the cynical, the lonely and the cursed
so hard to hear the positives when you always fear the worst

and I’ll sit with you in times of trouble…

but living ain't cheap
and laughing ain't easy
crying ain't for babies
and dying ain't for jesus
If i don't matter, then I don't matter

and I will never save you

I was staring out across that dread and bitter sea
thinking 'bout all the toils and tears it took to get to me?
Consciousness to nothingness just a sniff to a sigh
And how could I ever figure out heaven, if I don’t believe in trying

That’s why I’ll sit with you in times of trouble
I’ll sit with you in chains
I’ll sit with you as all things crumble
I’ll sit with you though flames
But I will never save you

La la la
Track Name: Born to Lose
I am sitting at the bar
I realize I need one more to put me away
and somewhere in my heart
I feel so lonesome for those old forgotten days

Well I listen to the jukebox play
those sad sweet songs sentimentally I sigh
been tossed in a corner for most my life

I can't get by anymore
I just don't know what its all for
I've lost that good ole loving feeling
Born to Lose

I’m just talking to be myself
But it don’t hurt no more, no it don’t hurt no more
As I sit by and watch the old folks
Do that Texas Two step cross that big wide-open floor

Then I go back to wondering all by myself
You know I am my only friend
And I tell you it’s a downright sin

I can't get by anymore
I just don't know what its all for
I've lost that good ole loving feeling
Born to Lose

So slide that bottle over here
And let me whisper in its ear
You know good whisky brings me home
So I don’t feel so damn alone
You know I have those lonesome blues
Cause I was born to lose that
good ole loving feeling
Born to Lose

I've lost that good ole loving feeling
Born to Lose
